The storefront widget

The widget is the control on your product page where a shopper chooses to subscribe. It is a Shopify theme app block, so it lives in your theme and you position it in the theme editor.

Adding it

Online Store → Themes → Customize → a product template → Add block → Subscribe & save.

Then drag it under the price and above Add to cart. Shopify can only append the block to the bottom of the section, so it arrives in the wrong place and has to be moved.

Placement is not cosmetic

Every major subscription app puts this control directly under the price. Left where Shopify drops it, the block can sit a third of the way down the page, below the description — after the shopper has already decided. It is the single most common reason a correctly configured plan appears not to be selling.

What it shows

The widget asks your store, through a signed app proxy, which plans apply to the product being viewed. Then it renders:

  • One "Deliver every" list of cadences — 1 week, 10 days, 1 month
  • The discounted price with the original struck through
  • The saving in money as well as percent — "You save $0.80 every delivery"
  • Each option's advantages as a short checklist
  • For prepaid, both the amount charged today and the delivery rhythm

Cadences are flattened across every plan that applies, de-duplicated, and sorted by real duration. Where two plans offer the same cadence the cheaper one wins.

Why there is no plan dropdown

Early versions asked the shopper to pick a plan by name and then a frequency. No major subscription app does that — Recharge, Loop, Appstle, Seal, Subify, Skio and Shopify's own widget are unanimous: the frequency control is the plan picker. A shopper should never have to choose by your internal plan name. The widget now works that way.

Styling

The widget picks up your theme's fonts and colours by default. You can override the accent colour and heading from the app's widget settings, which take precedence over the theme block settings so you can change every product page at once.

One-time versus subscribe

The widget is a subscription control; your theme's own Add to cart remains the one-off path.

Known gap

Competitors put both options inside one control with subscribe pre-selected, which converts better than two competing calls to action. We currently sit alongside your Add to cart rather than replacing it. If subscription conversion matters more to you than one-off sales, this is worth knowing when you read your numbers.

If the widget does not appear

In order of likelihood:

  1. The theme block has not been added to that product template
  2. The plan has no products attached, or not this one
  3. The plan is archived or unpublished
  4. You are looking at a different template than the one you edited

See Troubleshooting for how to check each.
